Your Top EV Charging Questions Answered

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more popular each year. So, we collected the most common questions our EV charging experts receive and answered them for you in this blog!

1. How long will my EV take to charge?

EVs charge as quickly as the level of charger can provide. There are three charger levels:

Level 1

These chargers are like phone cords but for cars. Since they plug into a regular outlet, they charge slowly at about 8km per charging hour. They are best for a cottage where a vehicle may be parked for a while or locations where a stronger charger cannot be installed.

Level 2

These chargers plug into a 240V receptacle (like a stove or dryer) or are hardwired into your home. They charge much quicker at 50-80km per charging hour. This is the most common home charging option as it balances affordability and convenience.

Level 3

Also called DC Fast Chargers, these are only found in commercial locations. The fastest Level 3 units can recharge 300km in around 18 minutes. But faster charging means a higher cost. Frequent fast charging has also been found to wear down the battery lifespan.

2. How much will it cost to charge my car?

A reasonable estimate would be about $6 for a full charge. However, this varies based on mileage, electricity rates, time of day, the charger you use, and more.

If cost is a concern, charging at home and during off-peak hours is the most affordable strategy. Commercial charging stations almost always cost more than charging at home. Fortunately, EV charging is much cheaper than gas, especially for vehicles that require premium fuel or diesel.

You can compare "refuelling" costs and other factors of different vehicles with the CAA car costs calculator.

3. How much do cold temperatures affect electric vehicles' driving range?

Electric vehicles, like cell phones, can lose some range in the winter due to the cold. Some companies are rolling out battery-warming systems that counteract this, but it is still an area of growing technology. Rest assured, this range loss is temporary and disappears in warmer temperatures.

A consumer report found that the battery distance range can drop by about 20% in colder temperatures, especially below 20°F (-7°C). As the vehicle warms up, it can regain some distance. Keeping the car on the charger is an effective way to keep the battery at the full range. Some drivers have found that charge scheduling and battery conditioning help, too!

Winter charging is the same as warm-weather charging. When shopping for a home charging unit, get a weatherproofed unit with a NEMA-type 3R rating. This rating ensures that the unit will function inside or outside regardless of the weather.

4. How long will the battery last?

In Canada, EVs typically come with an eight-year or 160,000km warranty for the battery, and they are expected to last 10-20 years. There is a push in the industry to continue improving battery life, but for now, here are some best practices:

  1. Park in sheltered places to minimize exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  2. Keep rapid charging to a minimum.
  3. Avoid charging to the total capacity. Although it gives you maximum distance, it can diminish the battery's lifespan.

5. Can my home electrical system support a charger?

The answer depends on what charger you need and how much electrical capacity is left. We've written another blog post to help you understand this better. If you need more space, you may require an electrical panel or service upgrade at your home.
