Fluorescent lamps are being phased out across Canada. As of January 1, 2026, many common mercury-containing lamps can no longer be imported or manufactured. Additional sales restrictions for several fluorescent lamp types are expected to follow in 2030.

Here’s the phase-out timeline:

Kraun Electric replaces all types of commercial, industrial, and institutional lighting — including fluorescent tubes (T5, T8, T12), compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), high-pressure sodium vapour fixtures, metal halide high-bays, and incandescent or halogen fixtures. We install LED replacements for interior lighting, exterior lighting, emergency and exit lighting, and parking lot poles across Niagara and Hamilton. 

The cost of a lighting retrofit depends on the number of fixtures, the type of LED replacement required, the condition of existing wiring, and whether controls or sensors are being added. A small commercial office retrofit may be a few thousand dollars; a full industrial facility upgrade with high-bays and controls can run into the tens of thousands. Yes. Canada’s Products Containing Mercury Regulations ban the import and manufacture of most fluorescent lamps starting January 1, 2026. Screw-base CFLs have no sales exemption. Pin-base CFLs, straight fluorescent (T8, T5, T12), and non-linear fluorescent lamps are banned from import and manufacture in 2026, with sales prohibited from January 1, 2030. High-pressure sodium vapour and metal halide lamps follow in 2029. All can be replaced with LED technology, which is mercury-free and more energy-efficient. If your facility in St. Catharines, Hamilton, or anywhere in the Golden Horseshoe still uses these lamp types, now is the time to plan your LED conversion. 

Not necessarily. Kraun plans lighting retrofits around your operating schedule. For facilities that run continuous shifts, we can phase the installation by zone or floor, or schedule work during planned downtime. We communicate the plan clearly so your team knows what to expect and disruption is kept to a minimum. 

Kraun supplies the LED fixtures as part of the project. We’ll recommend the right fixture for your space — the right lumen output, colour temperature, and form factor — so you’re not left to source them independently. Note that Kraun is not a lighting designer; we recommend and supply proven LED products appropriate for industrial, commercial, and institutional applications, and handle complete installation. 

Government rebate programs for commercial and industrial LED retrofits in Ontario are typically administered through lighting suppliers rather than electrical contractors. Ask your Kraun estimator about what programs may be available through our supply chain at the time of your project. Kraun will make you aware of any opportunities we’re aware of, but the application process generally runs through the supplier.
