Fluorescent phase-out
Still running fluorescent lighting?
It’s time to plan your LED conversion.
Fluorescent lamps are being phased out across Canada. As of January 1, 2026, many common mercury-containing lamps can no longer be imported or manufactured. Additional sales restrictions for several fluorescent lamp types are expected to follow in 2030.
Here’s the phase-out timeline:
|
Lamp Style |
Key dates |
|---|---|
|
Screw-base compact fluorescent lamps / CFLs |
No import or manufacture from January 1, 2026. No sales exemption. |
|
Pin-base CFLs, straight fluorescent lamps, and non-linear fluorescent lamps, including T8, T5, T12, U-tube, and circline lamps |
No import or manufacture from January 1, 2026. Replacement lamps are exempt until December 31, 2027. Selling is prohibited January 1, 2030. |
|
High-pressure sodium vapour lamps and metal halide lamps |
No import or manufacture from January 1, 2029. Replacement lamp exemption begins January 1, 2029. |
